Hydrobiology Laboratory

About | English

The Aquatic Ecology Laboratory is interested in saltwater and freshwater fish ecology, community and functional ecology. In particular, we are interested in understanding the mechanisms that structure ecological communities at spatial and temporal scales and in quantifying such relationships. We use both natural and human-impacted freshwater ecosystems to investigate how environmental, historical and anthropogenic factors influence community assembly, food web structure and ecosystem functions.

We use fish and macro-invertebrates as model organisms to understand how communities are structured, modified and re-established. Our research programme is field-based and we use multiple integrative techniques in our research: Stable isotope analysis, Stomach content analysis, Morphological - functional character analysis, Geometric morphometry analysis.
