The Department of Biology began its educational activities in 1990 within the Faculty of Science and Letters. Research in the Department covers areas such as plant physiology, biodiversity, biotechnology, ecology, flora, fauna, genomics, conservation biology, molecular biology, population genetics, proteomics, and toxicology. The Department consists of six divisions: Botany, Ecology, General Biology, Hydrobiology, Molecular Biology, and Zoology. As of 2025, the department employs 10 professors, 4 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, 4 lecturers, and 4 research assistants.. The Department offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.

The aim of the Department of Biology is to equip students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in the life sciences in line with current needs, to foster analytical thinking skills, and to encourage them in this regard. Each year, 50 undergraduate students are admitted to the program, which has a duration of four years. Graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct research and keep pace with new developments in biology. They have career opportunities both in private enterprises and in public institutions and research centers. Rapid advancements in biotechnology are creating new opportunities for biologists.

All faculty members actively contribute to research and educational activities, enabling them to remain academically active in their areas of interest. The Department organizes seminars, symposia, workshops, and similar events, in which students are encouraged to participate. Through bilateral agreements with higher education institutions in Europe, students are encouraged to gain international experience via programs such as Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci.
